Abstract
Ginseng root (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) has been used as a tonic in oriental medicine from ancient times and a variety of oriental medical prescriptions containing ginseng are still popular up to the present. It is believed that the effects of ginseng are due to some of the saponin fractions from the plants. Nowadays chemical and pharmacological activities of ginseng are actively studied by a number of investigators. The present study was involved with the action of prolactin secretion from anterior pituitary gland by ginseng saponin since it was handled down by tradition that ginseng might influence on the milk secretion when it was given to nursing mother. To investigate the effect of ginseng powder on the prolactin production, male adults studies were carried out. Ginseng powder was given to male adults twice a day and the amount of porlactin in plasma was detemined by radioimmunoassay technique. For prolactin assay by RIA, Abbott human rolactin were used as a standard. The results indicated that it was found any changes in prolactin plasma levels were not observed in male adults who ginseng powder were given orally for 2 and 3 months.
